Dominican Republic wins the first place in the 6th Ibero-American Karate-do Championships after winning four gold medals, one silver and two bronze in the competition ended Saturday night in Managua, Nicaragua.

According to Cuban news agency Prensa Latina, the Caribbean country was followed by Spain with four gold medals and two bronze, while third place was for Mexico with two gold medals.

Edwin Castro, Nicaraguan congressman and President of the Organizing Committee, said the championship was a total success considering the participation of athletes from 21 countries, adding the competition showed a high competitive level.

Castro said Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica also won gold medals, which proves the good Karate Do level there is in Central America.

"Nicaragua is moving forward, we have being doing it strongly and the team has given an excellent battle," he said about the host team.

The Ibero-American Karate Do Championships was officially opened last Friday by Nicaragua' s President Daniel Ortega and hosted some 180 athletes. The competition was held in the Convention Center of Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Managua. Endi
