Indian foreign secretary starts visit to Maldives

Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar Monday started an official visit to the Maldives as part of interactions with South Asian neighbors by New Delhi, said local media.

India's external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted: "Completing the SAARC Yatra for a safe, secure and prosperous South Asia. Jaishankar in Maldives today."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier asked the foreign secretary to visit all members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) as a new policy to build closer ties with India's immediate neighbors.

Jaishankar is scheduled to meet Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon and other leading members of several governmental institutions and political parties, said Indo- Asian News Service. Endi
