Ugandan President Museveni flags-off team for 2015 Netball World Cup

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Friday afternoon officially flagged off the national team for the 2015 Netball World Cup.

"I wish you all the best at the World Cup and carry the Ugandan flag high," said the President during the ceremony held at the National Council of Sports (NCS) headquarters in Lugogo.

The President also promised to give all the 23 members traveling to Sydney pocket money of US$1,000 each. "Let them pick the money on Saturday before they leave," said the President.

The Ugandan team is expected to fly out on an Emirates Airlines flight on August 1st ahead of the World Cup which runs August 7-16. Uganda is pooled alongside Fiji, Wales and Zambia in Group D.

The team handled by Rashid Mubiru has 12 members including six players from the side that booked the World Cup ticket during the qualifiers in Botswana last year. The three players who have been dropped include Hadija Nakabuye, Martha Soigi and Susan Atim.

Susan Nowel Anek Ongom, President Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) thanked the President for the support and promised that the team will carry the Ugandan flag high. Sports Minister Charles Bakkabulindi and NCS General Secretary Jasper Aligawesa also attended the ceremony.

Besides the African teams Uganda, Zambia, Malawi and South Africa, the other squads to take part in the World Cup include Australia, New Zealand, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, England, Jamaica, Scotland, Samoa, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
