Singapore closely watching developments in Malaysia: FM

Singapore is closely watching developments in Malaysia, said Singaporean Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam Friday ahead of his trip to Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting.

When asked what he thought about recent political developments in Malaysia, Shanmugam said being each other's closest neighbors, Malaysia and Singapore are "linked by an umbilical cord", Channel NewsAsia quoted the foreign minister as reporting.

Shanmugam noted that total trade between Malaysia and Singapore stands at 111 billion Singapore dollars (81.1 billion U.S. dollars) , and the two countries are among each other's top trading partners al as well as among each other's top investors.

Shanmugam said stability in both countries is important, and any instability in Malaysia will deeply affect Singapore and vise versa. Endi
