Police killing raises concern in S. Africa

Xinhua, July 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Four police officers have been killed in South Africa in three days, raising concern over growing risk to police officers amid rampant crimes.

The four police officers, three from Gauteng Province and one from Western Cape were brutally killed in the line of duty.

The latest killing took place in Johannesburg on Friday morning when unidentified gunmen shot two on-duty police officers, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said.

One of the two officers who were shot and wounded has died in hospital, the SAPS said.

Several suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing.

On Wednesday, a police officer was stabbed to death in Cape Town after stopping to change a flat tyre.

A day later, another police officer was shot dead in a shoot-out with a group of robbers in Pretoria.

Official statistics show that in the 2014/2015 financial year, 35 on-duty and 51 off-duty police officers were killed.

"These numbers are too high, our police officers put themselves in the line of fire every day to protect South Africans," the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) said.

The DA urged the SAPS to ensure that all suspects be arrested and face the full might of the law. Endit
