Trust in EU reaches above 50 pct in Latvia: poll

Over half of Latvia's population, or 51 percent, have trust in the European Union (EU), according to a Eurobarometer survey conducted in spring 2015 on behalf of the European Commission.

As many as 31 percent of respondents in the poll voiced distrust in the EU and 18 percent said they did not know.

The Eurobarometer survey showed that Latvians' trust in the EU is at a higher level than in the EU on average, as 40 percent of respondents across the bloc said they trust the EU and 46 percent said they do not, while 18 percent are undecided.

Asked to name the EU's best achievements, 70 percent of respondents in Latvia said it was the free of movement of people, goods and services, 47 percent named peace among EU member states, 31 percent named the single currency, 33 percent named student exchange, 12 percent named the EU's economic strength, 15 named the EU's global influence, 20 percent the social system and nine percent named the common agriculture policy as the bloc's greatest achievement.

The Eurobaromenter spring survey, which was conducted from May 16-17, included 31,868 respondents in EU member states and candidate countries. Endit
