Republic of Congo opposition urges boycott of constitutional referendum

Xinhua, July 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Republic of Congo's political and social forces on Wednesday urged the population to boycott any attempt to change the 2002 Constitution through a referendum initiated by the government.

In a joint statement issued after their "alternative dialogue" held in the capital Brazzaville since Sunday, the 630 participants warned of "heroic resistance to defend the constitutional order in case it is violated."

They noted that changing the Jan. 20, 2002 Constitution will be "a coup" and risks plunging the country" in another crisis situation."

The opposition further urged the government to take necessary measures to organize the 2016 presidential elections within the stipulated period and to put in place a consensual electoral timetable.

In addition, they urged the government to immediately set up an independent electoral commission and prepare a computerized and reliable electoral register.

The opposition's dialogue came a week after the national dialogue initiated by President Denis Sassou-Nguesso which was held in Sibiti, a town situated about 200 km from Brazzaville.

Under the current Constitution, Sassou-Nguesso will not be able to contest for another presidential term after completing his second term in 2016. Endit
