New Zealand officials warn migrants of fake government website

Xinhua, July 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

New Zealand immigration officials Thursday warned migrants to beware of a fake government immigration agency website that is almost identical to the real site.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) said the website appeared to be a direct copy of the home page of the official INZ website, with a slight change in the domain name.

Consumers received an e-mail appearing to be from a trusted source inviting them to click on a link to the fake website where they were asked to enter personal details into a form as part of a phishing scam, said a statement from INZ.

Scammers used phishing scams to trick people into handing over personal information such as personal banking details, IRD numbers, social media passwords or, in this case, passport details, which could be very valuable to fraudsters.

The website and the forms looked very convincing.

The real website had the following link -- www.immigration.govt. nz -- while the scam website replaced a full stop with a dash and was www.immigration-govt.nz.

INZ was investigating steps it can take to have the site removed. Endi
