A suspected member of rebel New People's Army (NPA) was killed when an improvised explosive device, which allegedly he was planting against the government troopers, suddenly exploded in southern Philippine province of Compostela Valley, military said Wednesday.

First Lieutenant Alexandre Cabales, Army's 10th Infantry Division public affairs officer in charge, said the incident occurred in Panibasan village in Maco town Tuesday.

The unidentified male suspect's head and legs were dismembered apparently due to the strong explosion.

The suspect was allegedly laying the explosive supposedly intended for Army's troopers from the 46th Infantry Battalion conducting peace and development outreach program in the said village when the incident happened.

Upon investigation, a body and a detonating switch, similar to those recovered from NPAs, were found near the site, Cabales said.

Authorities were still trying to identify the suspect.

The 4,000-strong NPA has been waging war against the government for over four decades. Endi
