Vietnam sees more fires, explosions in 7 months

Vietnam experienced 1,967 fires and explosions that killed 61 people and injured 138 others in the January-July period, while the respective figures in the same period last year were 1,600 cases, 73 fatalities and 115 injuries, the country's General Statistics Office said Thursday.

The 1,967 fires and explosions caused total property losses of some 358.7 billion Vietnamese dong (15.9 million U.S. dollars).

In the first seven months of this year, natural disasters left 69 people in Vietnam dead or missing, injured 76 others, and damaged nearly 12,700 houses, 26,000 hectares of rice and other crops, the office said, adding that the combined losses were estimated at 620 billion Vietnamese dong (nearly 27.6 million U.S. dollars).

Natural disasters killed 83 people, injured 120 others and caused total property losses of some 772 billion Vietnamese dong ( 34.3 million U.S. dollars) from January to July 2014.

Vietnam reported 12,910 traffic accidents which killed 5,167 people, and seriously injured 3,221 others in the first seven months of this year, posting respective year-on-year declines of 12.4 percent, 3.8 percent and 2 percent, announced the office. Endi
