Colombian president urges FARC to abide by ceasefire for peace deal

Xinhua, July 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said Tuesday that a peace deal would unlikely be reached if the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas breaks the unilateral ceasefire declared on July 20.

Insurgents "must surrender their weapons" and be subjected to "some kind of justice" or there will be no peace agreement as people are losing their confidence in the ongoing peace process held in Havana, said the president.

On the other hand, Santos denied allegations that he agreed a "hidden bilateral ceasefire" with the FARC when he ordered Saturday to suspend bombings against rebel camps across the South American nation, regretting that some opposition leaders had criticized him for such decision.

After months of stagnation at the negotiating table and fighting on the battlefield, the Colombian government and FARC guerrillas resumed peace talks Thursday in Cuba, seeking to end the country's 50-year conflict. Endi
