IOC confident of new US city that replaces Boston in 2024 bid

Xinhua, July 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is "confident" that the US Olympic Committee would pick up another candidate city after Boston's withdrawal from the bid for the 2024 Olympic Games.

"We are confident that the US will make the right choice and that they can still put forward a strong candidate by 15 September," said the IOC in a statement. "USOC have made it clear that they would still very much like to see a US city host the Olympic Games 2024."

Boston claimed on Monday that it would no longer try to become the host city of 2024 Olympic Games, and USOC has to choose a backup city before 15 September, by which cities interested in the bid must submit applications to the IOC.

"For the IOC this was always about an American bid put forward by the United States Olympic Committee," said IOC president Thomas Bach in a statement. "This invitation phase is also an opportunity to determine which city will eventually be chosen by an NOC. We are confident that USOC will choose the most appropriate city for a strong U.S. bid."

Los Angeles is considered as a potential replacement for Boston.

IOC Executive Board meeting took place in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. Members of the board discovered that Boston had resigned the bidding, but the topic stayed undiscussed throughout the meeting.

IOC Director of Communications Mark Adams repeated Bach's statement when asked about the Boston retreat at the briefing.

Several other issues were talked about at the IOC board meeting. The service fee for future Summer Games bid cities were cut from $650,000 to $250,000, while the funding to the International Paralympic Committee was increased from $6 million to $7.5 million. The meeting also decided to publicize the host city contract for 2022 Winter Games.

Kiteboarding, BMX freestyle and beach handball were added into the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Endi
