New orders for U.S. manufactured durable goods increased at a higher-than-expected rate in June, the U.S. Commerce Department reported on Monday.
Orders for durable goods rose 3.4 percent in June from a month ago to 235.3 billion U.S. dollars, following two consecutive monthly declines. In May, the durable goods orders fell 2.1 percent.
Orders for transportation equipment, also up following two consecutive monthly decreases, led the increase. The orders for transportation rose 8.9 percent to 78.4 billion dollars.
Excluding the volatile transportation sector, new orders for manufactured durable goods increased 0.8 percent in June, suggesting business investment is slowly starting to pick up.
An industry survey showed economic activity in the U.S. manufacturing sector picked up expansion pace in June, which supported business investment. The manufacturing index, also known as the purchasing managers index (PMI), registered 53.5 in June, up from May's reading of 52.8, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said in a report early this month.
