World's biggest prawn farm planned in Australia

Australia's Northern Territory (NT) is fast-tracking what could become one of the world's biggest prawn farms.

If approved as the government wants, the 1.45 billion Australian dollars (1.2 billion U.S. dollars) Project Sea Dragon would expand Australia's farmed prawn production by 20 times to 100,000 tons per year.

It will be located on Lejeune Station near the NT and Western Australia border, with prawn processing to be done nearby.

The farm, to be owned by Seafarms Group, is expected to employ 1,600 people.

NT leader and Chief Minister Adam Giles said the project is an example of how the NT economy could be diversified as northern Australia is developed.

"It will make the NT the prawn capital of Australia but it will (also) put jobs out in locations close to communities," Giles told local media reporters on Monday.

The first shipments expected to leave Australia by 2018, destined primarily for Asia. Endi
