2nd LD Writethru: 2 killed in terrorist attack in northwest India

Xinhua, July 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least two people were killed and several others injured when four terrorists allegedly from Pakistan attacked a bus station and a police station in the northwest Indian state of Punjab Monday morning, said local media.

The terrorists fired indiscriminately in Punjab's Dinanagar town in the frontier district of Gurdaspur, attacking a bus station and then a police station, said Indo-Asian News Service.

At least seven civilians and two policemen were injured in the firings, and two of them later succumbed to injuries in hospital, according to the reports.

They attackers were wearing army fatigues and riding in a white car with local plate number, according to TV footages of CNN-IBN news channel.

They were being holed up in the Dinanagar station at the town some 10 km from the Pakistan border.

Five bombs were also found at a railway station nearby, said the reports.

The Indian army have rushed soldiers to the town while police reinforcements were made in an counter-offensive, while the Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the central government is closely following the situation.

While militant attacks in neighboring Kashmir are common, the highly fortified state of Punjab has been relatively safe from terrorism due to heavy presence of troops and security forces. Endi
