Palmeiras jump to third after Pereira brace

Xinhua, July 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Leandro Pereira struck either side of halftime as Palmeiras rose to third in Brazil's Serie A championship by routing Vasco da Gama 4-1 on Sunday.

Dudu and Victor Ramos were also on target for the visitors while Colombian striker Duvier Rascos scored a late consolation goal for the hosts.

Twenty-four-year-old Pereira, who joined Palmeiras from non-league Sao Paulo outfit Capivariano last year, has now netted six times from 10 Serie A matches this season.

The result at Sao Januario left Palmeiras on 28 points, only four points behind leaders Atletico Mineiro. Vasco remained 18th in the 20-team standings with 12 points.

In other matches on Sunday, Chapeocense overcame Fluminense 2-1, Santos beat Joinville 2-0, Corinthians drew 1-1 at Coritiba, Ponte Preta tied Internacional 0-0, Sao Paulo defeated Cruzeiro 1-0 and Flamengo won 1-0 at Goias. Endi
