New Zealand annual fruit exports hit record high

Xinhua, July 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

New Zealand's fruit exports surged by 20 percent in the year to the end of June to an annual record of 2 billion NZ dollars (1.32 billion U.S. dollars), the government statistics agency said Monday.

Higher prices and a 9-percent rise in the quantity of exports contributed to the overall rise, according to Statistics New Zealand.

"Record monthly fruit exports in April, May and June 2015 led to an all-time high for the year ended June," international statistics manager Jason Attewell said in a statement.

Kiwifruit and apples led the monthly increases, reaching record export values in May.

These increases occurred despite a 5.3-percent fall in the canopy area of kiwifruit, and a 4.8-percent fall in the area planted in apples, between 2012 and 2014.

Kiwifruit (59 percent), apples (28 percent) and avocados (5.7 percent) made up 92 percent of the value of total fruit exports for the June year.

The European Union, taking 27 percent of exports, was the largest market, followed by Japan (14 percent) and China (13 percent). Endi
