Cambodian ex-military general gets life for killing wife, daughter

A Cambodian court on Friday convicted a former major general Kim Marintha of committing an intentional murder and sentenced him to life in prison, according to a verdict pronounced by Presiding Judge Heng Kesaro.

Marintha, 57, who is chairman of GST Express Bus Company, was arrested in Thailand by Thai police in September last year after he had fled Cambodia for 7 months since killing his step wife and daughter.

The convict murdered his 30-year-old step wife and 6-year-old daughter in their house in Phnom Penh City and packed their bodies in plastic bags and stuffed them into a cooler, and asked his son- in-law and son to dump the cooler in Pich Nil valley in Kampong Speu province, more than 100 km west of Phnom Penh.

The former general killed his step wife after he found that the woman had an affair with another man and asked him for a divorce.

According to Friday's verdict, the court found him guilty of " committing an intentional murder" and sentenced him to life in prison, while his son-in-law and son were sentenced to 18 months and 30 months in jail, respectively.

His son-in-law was arrested in August last year, while his son is still on the run.

The court also ordered Marintha to offer the compensation of 200,000 U.S. dollars to the family of the victims. Endi
