Singapore's manufacturing output declines 4.4 pct in June

Xinhua, July 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore's manufacturing output declines 4.4 percent in June on a year-on-year basis. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, the country's manufacturing output fell 5.3 percent, Singapore's Economic Development Board (EDB)announced on Friday in a media release.

On a three-month moving average basis, manufacturing output contracted 4.9 percent in June 2015, compared to a year ago. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output decreased 3.3 percent in June 2015 compared with the previous month.

EDB said biomedical manufacturing cluster's output declined 0.6 percent in June 2015 compared to a year ago. The medical technology segment continued to post higher output as demand for medical devices and supplies remained strong, however this was offset by contraction in the pharmaceuticals segment.

Output of the chemicals cluster increased 4.2 percent on a year- on-year basis in June 2015, contributed by the specialties and other chemicals segments, said EDB in the news release. In the first six months of 2015, output of the chemicals cluster rose 3.5 percent compared to the same period in 2014.

As for the electronics cluster, its output fell 2.1 percent year-on-year in June 2015. All, except the semiconductor segment, recorded output growth. Cumulatively, output of the electronics cluster declined 1.2 percent from January to June this year, compared to the same period last year.

Output of the general manufacturing industries cluster contracted 3.3 percent in June 2015 on a year-on-year basis. This was mainly due to declines in the miscellaneous industries and printing segments. In the first half of 2015, output of the general manufacturing cluster decreased 1.8 percent on a year-on- year basis.

The output of precision engineering cluster decreased 5.0 percent year-on-year in June 2015, said EDB. Lower output in mechanical engineering work and weak demand for refrigeration systems and related parts led to a 2.5 percent decline in the machinery and systems segment. The precision modules and components segment also contracted 8.2 percent, with lower production of industrial rubber, wire and cable products and fabricated metal products. Endi
