Wildfire still burning on Croatian coast

Wildfire on Peljesac peninsula, southern Croatia, spread to the east due to strong winds at late evening on Thursday.

The wildfire, which started on Monday, has burnt 1,000 acres of forest, vineyards, fields and olive trees. Some 150 firefighters, helped by 50 soldiers and volunteers are fighting against the wildfire.

The wildfire near Smokvica municipality on southern Croatian island of Korcula was put under control on Thursday after burning around 900 acres of forest, vineyards and olive trees, according to Dubrovnik-Neretva County Protection and Rescue Service.

Croatia has had a week of unusually high temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius, making forest fires along its Adriatic tourist coast increasingly likely. Endit
