Vietnam eyes 1-2 medals at Olympic 2016

Xinhua, July 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Vietnam has set targets of winning 1-2 medals at Olympic 2016 in Brazil, and tried to grab a gold medal at Olympic 2020, the country's General Department of Sports and Physical Training said Thursday.

Vietnam also plans to advance in Top 3 at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in 2017 and 2030, and bag home 2-3 gold medals at the Asian Games (Asiad) in 2018, announced the department.

However, many Vietnamese sports experts and trainers said it is too hard for Vietnam to win one or two medals at Olympic 2016, citing its poorer performance in recent Asiad and Olympic events.

Vietnam gained four golds at Asiad 2002, three golds at Asiad 2006, one gold at Asiad 2010 and one gold at Asiad 2014.

To date, Vietnam has won only two medals at Olympic Games, including one silver by taekwondo fighter Tran Hieu Ngan in 2000 and another by weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan in 2008. Although 18 Vietnamese athletes, the biggest-ever number in Vietnam's Olympic delegation, attended Olympic 2012, all of them left the game empty-handed.

Four Vietnamese athletes have so far won berths to Olympic 2016, including Nguyen Thi Huyen (track and field), Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming), Hoang Xuan Vinh and Doan Quoc Cuong (shooting). Endit
