The cliff above a waterfall in a tourist resort in East Java suddenly collapsed on Tuesday, killing 3 domestic tourists and wounding 12 others, an official said here on Wednesday.

The incident took place at about 16:00 p.m. Jakarta time at Ngliman village of Nganjuk district when the soil at a height of 105 meters collapsed and hit local holidaymakers who were swimming at the bottom of the waterfall, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said.

"The incident occurred suddenly. It started with the collapse of an aging tree and was followed by the sliding down of stones and other materials, hitting tourists who were swimming down below, " he told Xinhua via phone.
