China claims world epee title in Moscow

Xinhua, July 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

China bagged their second world championship gold medal in women's team epee here on Saturday after beating Romania 45-36.

China became just the third country to win the gold medal at the world championships as reigning Olympic champions.

France won Olympic gold in 1996 and the world title in 1998 before Russia claimed the 2000 Olympic Games title and 2001 world championships crown.

China already were the only non-European team with a gold medal in this event at the world championships after beating France in the 2006 final. With their second gold medal in women's team epee China join Hungary (8), France (4), Russia (4) and Romania (2) as the only teams with multiple gold medals in this event.

Xu Anqi won her third medal and first gold medal in this event, after claiming two silver medals in the women's team epee in 2011 and 2013. Xu also claimed the bronze medal in women's individual epee earlier this tournament.

In the men's event, Ukraine completed their medal set in men's team epee as they had previously claimed the silver medal in 2013 and the bronze medal in 2005 and 2006.

Ukraine have now won a world championship gold medal in all three individual events and in team sabre and team epee in both men's and women's events.

South Korea finished runners-up to equal their best ever result in men's team epee. Endi
