Mexico arrests 7 public servants for suspected links to drug lord's prison escape

The Mexican Attorney General's office announced Friday that seven public servants had been arrested for suspected links to the prison escape of cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera on Saturday.

The office explained that the seven people had been transported to the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation Number 12 in the central state of Guanajuato.

It remains unclear what positions these seven held or what part they were alleged to have played in Guzman Loera's escape.

However, they will appear in front of the Fourth District Court for Federal Criminal Proceedings in Toluca, capital of the industrial central State of Mexico.

The investigation was ongoing and would "pursue all people, whether they are public servants or not, who participated in any way in the events of July 11," said the office.

Since the escape, government officials have pinned the blame for Guzman Loera's escape on corruption within the prison system that allowed his helpers to know exactly how to tunnel to his cell.

It was Guzman Loera's second prison break from a high-security prison facility. His first was in 2001 and he was recaptured in 2014. The notorious drug lord had recently been subjected to an extradition request from the U.S. government. Endi
