2nd LD Writethru: More than 200 passengers injured in train collision in Johannesburg

Xinhua, July 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

More than 200 people were injured in a train collision in Johannesburg on Friday night, authorities said.

Currently there was no report of deaths after the accident took place near the Booysens station in the city, said Netcare, a private emergency service.

The service put the number of injured at about 250 and said more injuries were expected as some passengers were still trapped in the wreckage.

Some of the injured are in serious condition and have been sent to various hospitals for treatment, Netcare spokesperson Santi Steinmann said.

"There are currently still patients at the scene, so the number might even increased to approximately 300," he said.

A group of paramedics were at the scene to rescue the passengers still trapped in the wreckage.

Witnesses said one train overturned when it collided with another train.

But the cause of the accident could not be determined right now, police said.

This was the second train collision in Johannesburg in less than three months. In late April, two trains collided at a station east of Johannesburg, killing one and injuring more than 200 others. Endi
