Nepal gov't allocates lowest share of budget for education in decade

The Nepalese government has allocated 98.64 billion Nepalese rupees (972.39 million U.S. dollars) for the education sector under the budget of fiscal year 2015-16.

The budget for education is the highest of all sectors however lowest compared with the past years as the share of education in the total budget declined 2 percent from last year.

The Nepalese government allocated only 12 percent to the education sector that suffered damage worth 28.6 billion Nepalese rupees and income loss of around 3.25 billion rupees in the massive earthquake on April 25.

Unveiling the budget on Tuesday evening, Finance Minister Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat said, "90 billion rupees of the total education budget is for school level and 8 billion for higher education."

The government has announced in the budget a golden handshake for the retirement of temporary teachers who have completed at least five years of service. There are around 8,000 such temporary teachers in Nepal.

As per the new programs, students of 1,000 community schools from remote areas will get tele-education facilities as the government strives to improve the performance of the students in major subjects.
