Lithuania to ease employment of non-EU citizens to appease foreign investors

Xinhua, July 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Lithuania's Ministry of the Interior will work on a new set of rules which will give relief to employers in Lithuania who wish to hire workers from non-EU countries, Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis said Tuesday.

"We can feel growing interest from the foreign investors' side. However, barriers and misgivings have been identified with permits to live and work in Lithuania is one of them," Skvernelis was quoted as saying in an official statement.

Investors are not satisfied with the terms and rules based on which permits for foreign workers are being issued, the minister added.

According to the preliminary plan, foreign companies, classified as strategic investors in Lithuania by the Ministry of Economy, will be provided with the service of specially designated migration specialists, who will take care of documentation and other procedures related to foreigner's work in the country.

"The procedures will take less time and will be more smooth in this case," Skvernelis said.

So far, employers are obliged to carry out all the requirements themselves.

According to Skvernelis, making these steps, Lithuania wants to send a clear message to the foreign investors that they are more than welcome in the Baltic country.

Meanwhile, matters regarding foreigners living and working in Lithuania are regulated by the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and other legal documents issued by the Ministry of Social Security and Labor of the Republic of Lithuania. Endit
