Portugal's tourism sector expects to set a new record in 2015 with the number of tourists expected to exceed 17 million, local media reported Monday.

According to Portuguese daily Diario Economico, the figure was recently revealed by Minister of Economy Antonio Pires de Lima.

Pires de Lima said tourism played an important role in the country's commercial balance and that Portugal greatly valued its tourism sector.

Growth indicators for tourism in Portugal show that the sector is driving GDP growth, with the country receiving around 16 million tourists last year, meaning around 10.4 billion euros (11.45 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue, 12.4 percent more than the previous year.

Portugal's economy is expected to grow 1.6 percent in 2015, according to the Portuguese government. Endit
