Cuba's canoeing team took its sixth Pan American Games gold medal by winning K-4 category on Sunday, making the island the top winner in the sport in the history of the regional games.
According to Cuban news agency Prensa Latina, after a tough final competition against Brazil, Cuba finished before the rival but with a slight difference. With this victory the Cuban squad kept the title won in Guadalajara 2011.
Jorge Garcia, 2011 champion in 1000m K-1 category, as well as silver medal winner in 1000m K-2 and gold medal winner in 1000m K-4, said this victory was strategic.
"Our goal was to watch the Argentine boat, but without neglecting Brazil, who won bronze medal in Guadalajara and always have good teams," said Garcia after receiving gold medal together with Reinier Torres, Reinier Mora and Alex Menendez.
"We climbed the boat willing to give it all. We did it despite the power of these two boats. We remained close but in the last 250 meters, we realized we could win," added Garcia.
Garcia also said it was the second medal for Cuba's canoeing team in Toronto 2015 and "this makes us feel optimistic."
Cuba's canoeing team has won in Havana 1991, Mar del Plata 1995, Santo Domingo 2003 and Guadalajara 2011. Endi
