Tokyo stocks open higher following overseas stocks gains

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Monday supported by gains in European and U.S. stocks last Friday.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 178.59 points, or 0.90 percent, from Friday to 19,958.42. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 19.00 points, or 1.20 percent, at 1,602.55.
