Zenit claim Russian Supercup title

Xinhua, July 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Russian Premier League champions Zenit St. Petersburg on Sunday have rounded out a stellar 2014/15 season by claiming the Russian Supercup title over Moscow rivals Lokomotiv Sunday evening.

A late equalizer from Zenit defender Igor Smolnikov took the tense final into 30 minutes of scoreless extra-time, before Zenit prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout to send Zenit's vocal home fans into ecstasy.

The win makes partial amends for Zenit's poor showing in European competitions this season.

Despite dominating the Russian Premier League and claiming the league title with several rounds to spare, Andre Villas-Boas's star-studded team once again failed to make a deep run in the UEFA Champions League this season.

The Supercup win nevertheless confirms Zenit as the Russian team to beat in 2015/16. Endi
