New Zealand soccer team expelled from Oceania Olympic qualifier

Xinhua, July 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

New Zealand was expelled hours before the final of Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament as they were found to have fielded an ineligible player in the semifinals.

The Oceania Football Confederation disciplinary committee decided that South Africa-born defender Deklan Wynne was not eligible to play after Vanuatu protested following their 2-0 semifinal loss.

As a result, Vanuatu was awarded the semifinal victory and went on to the final facing Fiji in Sunday's final.

The winner of the final will represent Oceania at next year's Rio de Janiero Olympics.

New Zealand represented the Oceania confederation at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics after Australia left the region to join the Asian confederation. Endi
