Army operations kill 20 militants in Afghanistan

Xinhua, July 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

About 20 militants have been killed as Afghan army waged military operations in separate provinces, the country's Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

"During the past 24 hours, the Afghan army carried operations across the country, killing 20 Taliban rebels, including a local insurgent's leader and a would-be suicide bomber," the ministry said in a statement.

Up to five army troopers also died as a result of insurgents' firing and landmine explosions within the same period, the statement added.

The Taliban-led violence continues in Afghanistan. Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in restive provinces as they assumed the full security charges from NATO-led troops since Jan. 1.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments. Endi
