Atletico Mineiro tighten grip on Brazil Serie A lead

Atletico Mineiro consolidated their place at the top of Brazil's Serie A standings on Saturday with a 2-0 victory at Ponte Preta.

Thiago Ribeiro opened the scoring at the Moises Lucarelli stadium in the 28th minute before Giovanni Augusto added another goal two minutes from time.

The result lifted Atletico to 29 points from 13 matches, three points ahead of second-placed Gremio, who defeated Vasco da Gama 2-0 on Saturday.

In the day's only other match, Santos rose to 15th after routing Figueirense 3-0.

Sunday's fixtures include Flamengo's home clash against Corinthians and Fluminense's trip to Atletico Paranaense. Endi
