Uganda slips to 73rd position in latest FIFA rankings

Uganda has slipped to 73rd place in the latest Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) rankings released on Thursday in Zurich, Switzerland.

Despite the national senior team defeating Botswana 2-0 in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier and the U-23 ejecting Rwanda 4-1 on aggregate in the 2015 Africa U-23 Championship qualifier, Uganda still dropped by two places.

Edgar Watson, the Chief Executive Officer of the Federation of Uganda Football Association (Fufa) told Xinhua that despite the drop, the national teams will keep working hard with the objective of qualifying for the respective championships.

"Dropping in the rankings is normal and all we need to do is keep focused," added Watson.

Uganda however maintained their high rank in the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa) region, while Rwanda moved 16 places to 78th place and Sudan also moved 18 places to 90th.

The other nations in the Cecafa region in their order of ranking include Ethiopia (101), Kenya (116), Burundi (131) and Tanzania (139).

Algeria remained Africa's highest ranked nation moving to 19th place, while 2015 Afcon champions Cote d'Ivoire is in 21st place, while Ghana is in the 25th position. Nigeria also slipped by 14 places to 57th, while the 2015 Afcon hosts Equatorial Guinea is at 63.

For the first time after several months, Argentina who lost to Chile in the 2015 Copa America Cup, climbed top of the rankings above world champions Germany. Belgium and Colombia are third and fourth respectively. Endi
