Ukraine to hold multinational military exercises this month

Xinhua, July 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Multinational military exercises Saber Guardian and Rapid Trident-2015 will be held in the western Ukrainian town of Yavoriv on July 20-31, the country's Deputy Defense Minister Igor Dolgov announced here on Thursday.

"About 800 servicemen from the Ukrainian side will participate in the drills and about the same number of participants will come from other countries," he told reporters during a media briefing.

The exercises are expected to involve troops from seven foreign countries, in particular the United States, Great Britain, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia and Lithuania, Dolgov said.

According to him, the drills are aimed at "strengthening cooperation between the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the military troops from other countries."

The announcement of exercises came amid an armed confrontation in eastern Ukraine, where government servicemen fight against pro- independence rebels in a conflict, which has claimed more than 6, 400 lives since April 2014.

The Yavoriv military facility is near the Polish border and nearly 1,000 km away from the combat area in eastern part of the country. Endite
