Thailand's Deep South records 23 violent incidents in June-July

Thailand's restive Deep South has registered 23 violent incidents over the past month, only three of which have been confirmed to be insurgency-related, a security officer said Thursday.
From June 5 to July 8, 11 people were killed and 15 others injured in the 23 incidents, Col Pramote Prom-in, spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 was quoted by Bangkok Post as saying.
Six of the incidents have been determined as ordinary crimes while 14 others are still under investigation, Pramote said, adding the authorities have continued to stress security and convenience for local people to carry out religious activities during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan
The Deep South, which refers to three Muslim, ethnic-Malay dominated southern border provinces - Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and four districts of Songkhla province, has been plagued with insurgent violence since January 2004.
The spokesman also disclosed that 11 people had been arrested for their suspected connection with a bombing spree in Yala from May 14 to 16, during which period at least 56 explosives were reportedly detonated or discovered undetonated.
Seven of the suspects have confessed to their involvement in the bombings, which left 18 people injured and properties damaged, according to Pramote. Endi
