Myanmar registers record number of trafficked child victims in June

Myanmar registered a record number of six trafficked child victims in June this year, according to an official report Wednesday.

Three of the female child victims aged between 13 and 16 are from Yangon, Mandalay and Sagaing regions who were found trafficked overseas for marriage or labor, while the other three were forced to work as prostitutes in Myanmar, the police authorities were quoted as saying.

The police revealed that all of the victims but one, who was sold as a bride to a neighboring country, could be rescued.

The authorities claimed that it rescued 12 out of 17 victims in June in connection with 10 human trafficking cases with the majority of them being women.

According to police figures, a total of 113 traffickers were arrested in connection with 66 trafficking cases in the first half of this year mostly occurring in Shan, Mandalay, Yangon and Kachin regions or states.

Statistics show that since 2006 as of June this year, a total of 1,189 trafficking cases were exposed with 2,144 traffickers being arrested and more than 2,000 victims rescued. Endi
