France to review security of army ammunition depot after explosives' theft

French defense ministry on Tuesday ordered an assessment of all military bases stocking ammunition after identified men had stolen a pile of explosives from a military site in Miramas, southern France.

In a statement posted on its website, the ministry said the Defense Protection Branch of Facilities, Resources and Activities (DPID) would take the charge to evaluate "within two weeks" the means deployed to ensure the protection of army sites storing ammunition and propose new measures to avoid security gap.

The ministry's decision came after about 180 detonators and 40 grenades were stolen on Monday afternoon from Miramas base, a logistical platform used the French army's external operations, local medias reported.

In its report, the local broadcaster Europe 1 said the robbers cut a wire fence to break into the compound, adding the site has no surveillance cameras.

Marseille prosecutor opened an investigation into "burglary committed by an organized gang" and "fraudulent breaking into a military compound". Endit
