Subs merely deterrent weapon system: Thailand's Prayut

Xinhua, July 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thailand may merely use submarines for a deterrent weapon system but not for offensive reasons, said Thai leader Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday.

He made the remarks after Thai navy's plan to purchase three newly-built subs from China under a government-to-government dealing.

"Subs may be viewed as a deterrent to (possible enemy) offensives. We may have such a deterrent weapon system to safeguard our sea lines of communication, fishing boats and maritime resources in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea."

"Subs may practically manifest our defense potentials. But we are not using them to wage war with any other country," said Prayut. Endi
