Tokyo stocks open sharply higher after steep declines

Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher in early trading Tuesday after Monday's steep declines.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 271.79 points, or 1.35 percent, from Monday to 20,383.91. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 21.47 points, or 1.33 percent, at 1,641.83.

Gainers were led by shipping, insurance and air transport issues. Endi
