Gremio rise to second in Brazil's Serie A

Xinhua, July 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two-time champions Gremio rose to second in Brazil's Serie A standings on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over 10-man Santos.

Gremio's Pedro Rocha opened the scoring at Santos' Vila Belmiro stadium before Geuvanio was dismissed just before the half-hour mark for his second rash challenge in as many minutes.

Rafael Galhardo extended Gremio's lead but Ricardo Oliveira gave the hosts hope with a 65th-minute strike.

However Yari Mamute put the result beyond doubt by drilling in a low shot nine minutes from time.

Gremio are now equal on points with first-placed Atletico Mineiro while Santos have slipped into the relegation zone.

In other matches on Sunday, Avai drew 2-2 with Sport Recife, Goias and Corinthians played out a goalless draw, as did Sao Paulo and Fluminense, Figueirense beat Flamengo 2-1, Atletico Mineiro overcame Internacional 3-1 and Palmeiras outclassed Ponte Preta 2-0. Endi
