Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Saturday visited North Sinai to inspect troops following a series of deadly attacks on military checkpoints, state-run news agency MENA reported.

Presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said that Sisi wore a military uniform during his visit to show solidarity with the Armed Forces.

Sisi stressed that the Egyptian army was doing a great job and that history would remember its role in protecting the nation.

He also saluted military officers for their sacrifices for the sake of the Egyptian people.

A wave of terrorist attacks hit Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday. According to an Armed Forces statement, the attacks left 100 extremists and 17 soldiers dead.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS) group, claimed responsibility for these attacks.

Since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the army in 2013, North Sinai witnessed escalated attacks launched by extremists, leading to hundreds of deaths.

The Egyptian Armed Forces then launched large-scale operations to crack down on extremists in the region. Endit
