Russia claim second win at FIVB World Grand Prix

Xinhua, July 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Russia trounced Dominican Republic 3-0 here Saturday afternoon for their second win in a row at the FIVB World Grand Prix women's volleyball tournament.

Following an opening 3-1 victory over Germany on Friday, Russia went on to beat the Dominican Republicans 25-15, 25-22 and 25-8.

The second set was hotly contested and it was tied at 22-all before Russia ran off three straight points to make it two sets to nil.

Dominican Republic made no real resistance in the third set.

Kseniia Ilchenko and Alexandra Pasynkova scored 10 points each for Russia, who outblocked their opponents 16-4.

"I am delighted with our performance, especially the blocking," said Russia head coach Yury Marichev.

Despite dropping their second match in two days, Dominican Republic coach thought it was good learning experience for her young players.

"We will learn from the losses and get better prepared for the World Cup," he said.

The FIVB Women's Volleyball World Cup will be held in Japan from Aug. 22 to Sept. 6 with the top two finishers to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Later on Saturday, China will play Germany in the Beilun Sports and Arts Center. Endi
