"No" vote likely in Greek debt deal referendum: survey

Xinhua, July 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Most Greeks would say "No" to creditors' proposal on a new debt deal in Sunday's referendum, the results of a survey showed Wednesday.

Forty-six percent of respondents in the survey conducted by polling firm Pro Data for the local newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton said they would reject the lenders' offer for a tough deal with the debt-laden country.

Meanwhile, 37 percent respondents said they would approve the deal in order to avoid a possible exit from the euro zone.

Voter turnout may be high as 86 percent of the respondents said they intended to vote in Sunday's referendum.

Greece on Wednesday became the first developed country in arrears to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after World War II, heading to an abrupt default and possible "Grexit" should last-minute efforts to reach a compromise debt deal on a third bailout program fail.

On Saturday, the Greek government decided to hold a referendum on the issue. Endi
