1st LD: Egypt army says 10 soldiers killed, injured in North Sinai

The Egyptian army said on Wednesday that 10 soldiers had been killed and wounded in militant attacks on five checkpoints in Egyptian province of North Sinai.

Meanwhile, at least 22 "terrorists" have been killed during clashes between soldiers and militants, military spokesperson Mohamed Samir said in a statement.

Earlier on Wednesday, a top security source told Xinhua at least 50 security forces have been killed in a wave of attacks on military bases.

Initial information said some 70 "terrorists" have attacked five military checkpoints simultaneously, the military statement added.

The attacks came two days after Egypt's Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat was assassinated in a car bomb attack.

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi pledged on Tuesday tougher laws against militants at Barakat's funeral. Endit
