Ukraine needs about 1.2 billion U.S. dollars for post-conflict recovery and the development of government-controlled territories in its eastern regions, Deputy Prime Minister Gennady Zubko said here Tuesday.
"The funds are needed for infrastructure reconstruction, as well as for the employment, social rehabilitation and housing assistance of displaced persons," Zubko told a meeting to discuss the restoration of the Lugansk and Donetsk regions, known locally as Donbas.
Kiev hopes to raise about 300 million dollars from the United Nations (UN) to start reconstruction works in Donbas, he said, adding that the remaining 900 million dollars from the planned recovery fund will be allocated from the state budget or absorbed as loans from international banks.
The armed confrontation between government troops and pro-independence rebels, which has been raging in eastern Ukraine since April 2014, has caused extensive damage to public and civilian infrastructure, destroying more than 20,000 houses and hundreds of social facilities in the region.
According to a UN report issued early this month, about 5 million people were affected by the conflict and 1.23 million were displaced. Endi
