Iraqi PM retires army chief of staff

Xinhua, June 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi retired chief of staff of the Iraqi armed forces, while the Iraqi army and security forces are preparing for major offensives against the Islamic State (IS) militants who seized large parts of the country since June last year, official televisions reported on Tuesday.

"General Babaker Zebari, Chief of Staff of the Iraqi armed forces, has been retired in accordance with an order by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Commander-in-Chief of Iraqi armed forces," the state-run Iraqiya channel said without giving further details about the reason behind the Abadi's order.

Abadi's order came as the Iraqi security forces and allied militias, known as Hashd Shaabi, or popular mobilization, were preparing for major offensives against the IS group who seized large territories in west and north of Baghdad since June last year. Endit
