Death toll of Syrian soldiers in IS attack in Hama rises to 68

Xinhua, June 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The death toll of Syrian soldiers in recent attacks by the Islamic State (IS) in central province of Hama rose to 68, a monitor group reported Sunday.

The IS group launched "violent" attacks against three military checkpoints in the Sheikh Hilal area in northern countryside of Hama on Friday, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The UK-based watchdog group said the IS later withdrew from the area, which was targeted by a similar attack in March, during which more than 74 government soldiers were killed.

The IS attack against Sheikh Hilal area aims to cut the government's main supply line between Hama and the northern city of Aleppo, where the IS militants are fighting to gain more ground in the countryside of the key city near Turkish borders. Endit
