19 militants killed in northern Afghan airstrike

Xinhua, June 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

About 19 militants were killed after Afghan security forces carried out an airstrike in northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province overnight Friday, provincial police spokesman said on Saturday.

"The Afghan air forces conducted a raid on militants' hideouts in Ali Abad district midnight, killing 19 militants, including five foreign fighters," spokesman Sarwar Hussainee told Xinhua.

A total of eight militants were wounded by the attack, the police official said, adding that one woman was among the killed militants.

"The airstrike was part of an ongoing cleanup operation in Ali Abad and the neighboring Chardara district. The operation will continue before the areas are cleared of armed rebels," Hussainee noted.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments.

The province, bordering Tajikistan, has been the scene of heavy fighting earlier this year as security forces have repelled militants, who tried to take control of several districts near the provincial capital Kunduz city, 250 km north of Afghan capital. Endi
